There are no required licenses to perform repossessions in New Jersey. There are no state requirements that the lender notify the debtor prior to repossession. So long as the loan is delinquent, the collateral may be repossessed. Federal law permits 'self-help' repossession provided it is executed without a breach of the peace. Under the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), lenders must grant debtors a fifteen day right of redemption. The lender is required to send certified mail informing them of their right to redemption. The lender can demand that the debtor pay the loan contractually current or the balance in full, at the lenders discretion. The This allows the debtor to reclaim their property by satisfying the lenders demand for payment.

New Jersey Repossession Recording: With County Clerk of county where property is located, within 5 days. Uniform Commercial Code adopted July, 1963. Refer to New Jersey Repossession Department of Banking for confirmation and filing of chattel mortgages.

New Jersey Repossession Documents Required to Transfer Ownership of New Jersey Repossession Motor Vehicles: Manufacturers statement of origin for new cars. Ownership of used car is passed through assignment by the seller to the buyer on the certificate of ownership.
